It is that time of a year. Every January we roll our eyes hearing about goals and resolutions and how this year will be better from last year and how this time that business idea will take off and… Blah, blah, blah. We keep hearing the exact same promises from the exact same people. The same people that would like to be this and that…if only!
What it is that’s missing? Why can’t we keep our promises and cannot stay consistent to a plan for our business’s good?
Goal setting is either an easy nor a simple thing. It’s not just about putting things that we’d wish to accomplish on a piece of paper. It is not something that we need to do just for the sake of it, not even because others do it. I don’t know why even there are countless sources that dictate the importance of goals, yet there is not a proper guide with all the steps and actions that guarantee we can all meet them. So what’s the plan?
I think that more or less we all tend to overthink because a simple answer won’t do. The thing is that goal setting is actually not the tricky part. Of course its important for us to write down the things that we want to accomplish but this alone is not enough. Not even close. The simple, obvious thing to do is to work on these goals. Every single day. To be disciplined and courageous enouph to chop them down to smaller chunks that we can handle. To not get overwhelmed by the mountain. To get to believe that we can crash this little pebble. Each and every day.
Since it is that simple, you ask, why isn’t everyone successful? Why sometimes it is so hard to even start working on something? What is wrong with me? I know why we keep failing. We fail because in order for us to crash that pebble each day we are convinced that we should feel a certain way. We believe that we need motivation. MOTIVATION. This is the holy grail, the essential ingredient for us to wake up and feel ready to tackle the day, to seize the moment to be at our best and to feel like we can conquer the world. The bad thing is that this bug that you have in your head, this perfect situation, won’t happen. Let alone every day. Best case scenario, this will be the exception rather than the rule. The good thing is that motivation is not a prerequisite or a necessity for all of us to keep going nevertheless and for all of us to keep growing as humans and as professionals.
We need to work on our goals. And that’s it. Let’s make ourselves a favour and accept that we need to keep doing the work even when we won’t feel like it, when it’ll rain and it’ll be hot, and when we’d rather sit on the couch watching Netflix. Motivation is as rare as a unicorn, and that’s ok. With that in mind, we will be able to cherish and fully embrace it when it finally comes our way.
