Things are what you make of them. It goes the same for circumstances. Like for example a pandemic.
Way back at my early days at university, I was getting quite obsessed with concept development, set design and managing a creative team as well. What I didnt know, was that there is actually a profession that combines all these into one. And more.
Art direction and creative direction became the wonderland I wanted to live and evolve in as a creative. For me to be able to form an abstract idea into visuals, and to be able to help immensely a brand to communicate their vision and story to their audience, was so fulfilling that I couldn’t let go. Sure, to work as an art director for advertising and design firms was nice, but I was excited to the idea of starting my own business as a solopreneur.
And so did I. A couple of months before Covid 19 hit - little did I know- I decided to start working on some personal projects with the intention to introduce my way of thinking and seeing things. At these early stages, I got involved not only in the concept development part but also in the project’s set design and styling stages ; sometimes I was the photographer even. Learning and understanding the complete process is really important, because apart from a well-rounded final result, it gives you the ability to communicate better your ideas and concepts with your creative team when the projects and clients get bigger over time.
Two years and counting, working as a creative & art director and as a solopreneur, offered me a ton of experience, but most importantly brought into my life creative people and collaborations that I couldn’t imagine possible when I first started this endeavour. Of course difficulties and unexpected turns will always be around, but to whomever reads this, please, do start. Turn your dreams and hopes into something real even when things seem to be falling apart.
